“Let It Be” is a song by The Beatles released as a single in March 1970, shortly before the album of the same name. Written by Paul McCartney and credited to the Lennon–McCartney songwriting partnership, it became one of the band’s best-known recordings from the final period of their career.
The song combines a memorable piano-led arrangement with elements of rock, pop and gospel. Paul McCartney’s lead vocal carries the central melody, while the arrangement gradually expands through drums, guitar, organ and supporting vocals. The result is a recording that feels restrained at the beginning but increasingly powerful as it develops.
At the center of “Let It Be” is a message of reassurance during difficult circumstances. Rather than presenting a complicated narrative, the song uses a simple recurring phrase to communicate acceptance, patience and the possibility of finding direction when circumstances feel uncertain.
The reference to “Mother Mary” has sometimes been interpreted as religious imagery, but McCartney has explained that the inspiration came from a dream involving his mother, Mary McCartney, who had died when he was a teenager. This personal origin adds another dimension to the song’s themes of comfort and reassurance.
Musically, the piano provides much of the recording’s foundation. The restrained opening allows McCartney’s vocal and melody to remain central before the arrangement grows larger. George Harrison’s guitar work adds another recognizable element, particularly as the recording moves toward its later sections.
“Let It Be” was recorded during a complicated period in The Beatles’ history. Sessions associated with the project began in January 1969 as the group attempted to return to a more direct approach to performing and recording. Material from these sessions eventually became the Let It Be album and the documentary film of the same name.
The single was released before the album and became one of the group’s final major releases while The Beatles were still together. The album version later appeared with production work by Phil Spector, while George Martin is credited as producer of the single version.
The recording also received significant industry recognition. “Let It Be” received nominations for Record of the Year and Best Contemporary Song at the 13th Annual Grammy Awards.
Decades after its release, “Let It Be” remains closely associated with the final chapter of The Beatles’ recording career. Its straightforward message, recognizable piano introduction and gradual musical build have helped it remain one of the band’s most enduring songs.
