About the Album
Dua Lipa is the debut studio album by British singer Dua Lipa, released on June 2, 2017. The project introduced her distinctive vocal style to a broad international audience and established the foundation for her subsequent career in mainstream pop music.
The album combines contemporary pop with electronic, dance and R&B-influenced production. Rather than following a single musical style throughout, it moves between energetic pop recordings, relationship-focused songs and more restrained performances.
Lipa had already released several songs before the full album arrived. Tracks such as “Be the One” and “Hotter than Hell” helped build her profile during the period leading to the debut album.
“New Rules” ultimately became the album’s defining international breakthrough. Written by Caroline Ailin, Emily Warren and Ian Kirkpatrick, the song presents a set of boundaries designed to prevent someone from returning to an unhealthy relationship.
Its success was particularly significant because “New Rules” became Dua Lipa’s first number-one single in the United Kingdom. The song also reached the Top 10 in the United States, substantially expanding her audience outside Europe.
“IDGAF” became another prominent recording from the album. Like “New Rules,” it approaches the end of a relationship from a position of independence rather than presenting heartbreak solely through vulnerability.
The album also includes “Lost in Your Light,” a collaboration with American singer Miguel. The duet demonstrates another side of the project and reflects the range of collaborators involved in Lipa’s debut era.
An important characteristic of the album is Lipa’s relatively low vocal register. Her voice provided an immediately recognizable element across songs produced by different collaborators and helped give the project a consistent identity.
The success of the album and its singles contributed directly to Lipa’s recognition at the 2019 GRAMMY Awards. She won Best New Artist, becoming one of the prominent new international pop performers to emerge from this period.
Viewed alongside her later albums, Dua Lipa captures an earlier stage of her musical development. While Future Nostalgia would establish a more clearly defined disco and dance-pop concept, the debut album shows the broader contemporary-pop foundation from which that later sound developed.
