÷ (Divide) is the third studio album by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. Released in 2017, the album expanded the combination of acoustic songwriting and contemporary pop production that had shaped his earlier work while introducing an even broader range of musical influences.
The album moves between intimate singer-songwriter material and recordings designed around larger pop arrangements. Acoustic guitar remains an important part of Sheeran’s sound, but the project also incorporates electronic production, rhythmic pop, folk influences and more heavily layered arrangements.
Two songs, “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill,” were introduced at the beginning of the album’s release campaign and immediately demonstrated its musical range. “Shape of You” uses a rhythm-driven pop arrangement, while “Castle on the Hill” approaches Sheeran’s childhood memories through a more expansive, guitar-oriented sound.
“Perfect” represents another side of the album. Built as a romantic ballad, the song places greater emphasis on melody and traditional singer-songwriter storytelling. Together, these recordings demonstrate how ÷ moves between different approaches while retaining Sheeran’s recognizable writing style.
Personal memory is an important theme throughout the album. Several songs look at relationships, family, friendship and earlier stages of life, giving the project an autobiographical character even when the production moves toward mainstream pop.
The album also reflects Sheeran’s interest in musical styles beyond conventional acoustic pop. Different tracks incorporate elements associated with folk traditions, contemporary rhythm-focused production and other influences, creating more variety than a single genre label can fully describe.
Despite that variety, Sheeran’s songwriting provides continuity across the project. Direct language, memorable melodies and personal observations remain central whether a song is built around acoustic guitar or a larger studio production.
÷ became a major commercial success and reached number one in multiple markets. It also received significant recording-industry recognition. At the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, the album won Best Pop Vocal Album, while “Shape of You” won Best Pop Solo Performance.
Within Ed Sheeran’s discography, ÷ represents an important stage in his development from a successful singer-songwriter into one of the most widely recognized international pop artists of his generation.
