Shape of You

“Shape of You” is a song by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran from his third studio album, ÷ (Divide). Released in 2017, the track became one of the most commercially successful recordings of Sheeran’s career and demonstrated a more rhythm-focused side of his pop songwriting.

Unlike many of Sheeran’s guitar-led ballads, “Shape of You” is built around a repeating rhythmic pattern and a relatively minimal arrangement. Percussion, keyboard sounds and vocal layers create much of the track’s movement, giving it a sound that differs noticeably from songs such as “Perfect” and “Thinking Out Loud.”

The song focuses on the beginning of a physical and romantic attraction. Rather than approaching the relationship through memories or long-term commitment, the narrative follows two people getting to know each other while their attraction develops.

The final songwriting credits also include Kandi Burruss, Tameka Cottle and Kevin Briggs because of the musical relationship between part of “Shape of You” and TLC’s “No Scrubs.”

Production plays an especially important role in the track. Instead of relying on a dense instrumental arrangement, the recording uses repetition and rhythm to create its hook. This leaves considerable space for Sheeran’s vocal phrasing and allows the melody to remain immediately recognizable.

Within ÷, “Shape of You” provides a strong contrast with the album’s more acoustic and autobiographical material. “Castle on the Hill,” for example, looks backward at Sheeran’s youth, while “Perfect” develops as a romantic ballad. “Shape of You” instead emphasizes rhythm, attraction and contemporary pop production.

The song became a major international success and was one of the recordings that defined the commercial impact of the ÷ era. It reached number one on pop charts in numerous countries and became the number-one song on Billboard’s 2017 year-end Hot 100 chart.

At the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, “Shape of You” won Best Pop Solo Performance. The award further demonstrated how Sheeran’s move toward rhythm-driven mainstream pop could coexist with the singer-songwriter style associated with the rest of his catalog.

“Shape of You” remains an important recording in Ed Sheeran’s career because it broadened his established sound without abandoning his emphasis on melody and direct, accessible songwriting.
